Once a lady gynae of a well known Hospital told me how mother-in law's face is crestfallen when they hear their daughter has given birth to a girl. Thank God that was in 90's.rajivahujahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02095674279755715445noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2918251469825166150.post-12489834897552772062011-01-31T10:37:56.157+08:002011-01-31T10:37:56.157+08:00@Ritu: Regressive retelling - agree with you Ritu....@Ritu: Regressive retelling - agree with you Ritu. She was adventurous and an independent thinker. That is why she asserted her right to accompany her husband on his vanvaas. Regressive retelling of the tale reduced her to the long suffering martyr we know her as. High time the original Sita comes into her own. Parents need to stop treating daughters as transferable goods (they're not even regarded as assets) that are to be groomed for marriage-worthy markers (fair, beautiful, graduate, homely) and focus instead on bringing them up to be independent individuals.

Humblegenius, I don't know if American society is a paragon of equality - look at the status of blacks, native Indians, even women. The rights of American women are enshrined in the US Constitution, just as they are for Indian women in the Indian constitution. The issue is of execution., which means a change in societal and cultural mores.

Your question is very relevant. A change in the mindset of parents (see above response) is absolutely critical. That, in addition with compulsory education for the girl child is the first few baby steps. It is a long battle but as long as there are curious, involved people who want to do the right thing - such as yourself - we should get there!Manreet Sodhi Someshwarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01566345149225306647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2918251469825166150.post-84381032252179026352010-11-23T01:52:00.496+08:002010-11-23T01:52:00.496+08:00thanks Manreet Maam for the useful info. I don't know if this is an assumption but as opposed to the American society, where equality reigns supreme, our society offers conflicting values at best.

For example, an American woman would have touted her right to equal rights basing this on the values propounded by their founding fathers. In our society, women folk have been asked to be brave and fight for justice (our Godesses, Rani Jhansi, etc) but they are also pressurized to be obedient and to honor the customs. touché!

Enough said about the injustice, what the world wants to know from you is this - What can we do in the near future to unlock potential for equality in our society?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2918251469825166150.post-24605417763602720502010-11-22T20:16:44.262+08:002010-11-22T20:16:44.262+08:00Weakness (physical and mental);shame and Guilt are...Weakness (physical and mental);shame and Guilt are taught to little girls at home-if we teach them courage and strength and to hold their heads up High we can change many things.varshahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17018447724654963962noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2918251469825166150.post-59881756317903018592010-11-18T17:27:34.766+08:002010-11-18T17:27:34.766+08:00Well said Humblegenius! The equality of American women that you refer to is what is typically called the second wave of feminism where women demanded social and cultural changes. Betty Friedan with her book, The Feminine Mystique, supposedly triggered this in the 60s. One major point of difference with India is the high level of illiteracy amongst Indian women, whereas the US Feminist movement targeted middle class educated women, a large segment.

Agre that women have to stop being victims. Compulsory education for the girl child - after ensuring she is born and not ending up a statistic in female foeticide data - is one way to go.Manreet Sodhi Someshwarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01566345149225306647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2918251469825166150.post-92028756413110742212010-11-18T13:09:48.223+08:002010-11-18T13:09:48.223+08:00A sage once said 'to bear injustice is also a ...A sage once said 'to bear injustice is also a sin' or something amounting to that. He has made a good point - women will need to take a good stand against these injustices, we cannot blame 'society'. To draw a parallel, American women acheived equality through their own initiatives.

In India, equality is seeping in at least in the big cities. It is so easy to see that if 50% of our population is empowered to make the same decisions that men currently make, our economy will grow at double the current rate.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
